The city was declared a World Heritage Site in the year 1985 due to its historical monuments from the 17th and 19th century. The small harbor town of Ilheus lies at the mouth of the Rio Ilheus in the South Atlantic in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The colonial past is particularly evident by the numerous churches.
