Between mainland Shetland and Orkney, lies Fair Isle, an island known best for its marvelous bird watching opportunities among its cliffs, along with a being the origin of a very distinctive style of knitting you see on Christmas jumpers every year! What’s impressive about this island’s history is that it has been inhabited from as far back as the Neolithic period, even though it is one of the UK’s most remote islands, with very little natural resources. Over the centuries, the island’s ownership has been passed around to different countries and kingdoms, and each culture has left its mark.
