The largest settlement of Svalbard was established in the 20th century. After suffering some damages during World War II, it was again rebuilt. It is for exactly that reason that the town is very modern. The colourful houses really bring out the charm in the city. Due to the relatively temperate climate, Longyearbyen is home to many plant species which are threatened with extinction. You will also be able to observe a various species of animals here.

Jan Mayen Island is a volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean and a part of the Kingdom of Norway. The island is mountainous, the highest summit being the Beerenberg volcano in the north. The isthmus is the location of the two largest lakes of the island. A regulation dating from 2010 renders the island a nature reserve under Norwegian jurisdiction. The aim of this is to ensure the preservation of a pristine arctic island and the marine life nearby, including the ocean floor.
